Substitute Teacher
Virginia Beach Friends School is seeking qualified substitute educators to work with students in grades Toddler through 8th Grade on a per diem basis.
Degree Requirements
- Associate's Degree is required. Preferred Bachelor’s Degree and above or in their senior year of undergraduate studies at an accredited college or university.
Job Responsibilities
- Willing to be contacted for coverage the morning of placement
- Must be able to work the full school day of 7:50 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
- Support the teacher by implementing the daily curriculum for assigned grade level
- Create and maintain a positive, structured learning environment
- Hold students to high academic and behavior standards consistent with the Virginia Beach Friends School Mission Statement
- Hold students accountable during class time, transitions, meals, recess time, and other learning opportunities that may be assigned to the substitute educator
- Collaborate with other teachers to ensure a safe environment for all students

Summer Camp Counselor
Join our vibrant Quaker community as a Summer Camp Counselor at our fun, interactive, and engaging summer camp. Grounded in our Quaker SPICES of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship, our summer camp offers children a nurturing and inclusive environment where they can explore, learn, and grow. As a camp counselor, you will play a key role in creating memorable experiences for campers, fostering their social, emotional, and intellectual development through engaging activities, games, and excursions.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and supervise groups of elementary-aged campers in various indoor and outdoor activities, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.
- Plan and implement age-appropriate activities, games, arts and crafts, and team-building exercises that align with Quaker values and promote social, emotional, and cognitive development. Our camps are thematic and you will receive the theme weeks in advance. As a counselor, it is your job to work with our Camp Director and your co-counselors to plan and implement fun, thematic activities.
- Foster a supportive and inclusive camp environment where campers feel valued, respected, and empowered to express themselves.
- Serve as a positive role model for campers, embodying Quaker principles of integrity, kindness, and peaceful conflict resolution in interactions with others.
- Collaborate with co-counselors and camp leadership to coordinate daily schedules, routines, and special events, ensuring a well-rounded and engaging camp experience for all participants.
- Provide guidance and support to campers in resolving conflicts, navigating social dynamics, and building positive relationships with peers.
- Assist with the setup, cleanup, and maintenance of camp facilities and equipment, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all participants.
- Communicate regularly with campers' families, providing updates on their child's experiences, achievements, and any concerns that may arise.
- Participate in all staff meetings and trainings to enhance skills and knowledge relevant to camp counseling and Quaker education.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in education, child development, or related field preferred.
- Previous experience working with children in a camp, childcare, or educational setting, with a strong preference for experience in a Quaker or similar progressive environment.
- Passion for working with children and creating positive learning experiences that promote growth, creativity, and self-discovery.
- Understanding of and commitment to Quaker principles, including equality, community, and nonviolence.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and connect with children of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities, including problem-solving, decision-making, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, as well as independently with minimal supervision.
- CPR/First Aid certification and background check are required
- Reliable transportation and timely arrival at camp are a must.

Mathematics Teacher
Position Summary:
The Middle School Math Teacher will be responsible for designing and delivering engaging math instruction to students in grades 6 through 8, ensuring that all students are challenged, supported, and encouraged to reach their full potential. The teacher will work collaboratively with colleagues, maintain strong communication with families, develop meaningful and supportive relationships with students, and contribute to the overall life of the school.
Responsibilities will include:
- Teach middle school math classes (grades 6-8) in alignment with the school’s curriculum, which emphasizes conceptual understanding, mastery of concepts, and real-world problem-solving.
-Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs and learning styles of students, including those who may require additional support or enrichment.
-Incorporate Quaker values, including community-building, cooperation, peer-on-peer learning, collaboration, and reflection, into the teaching of mathematics.
-Create a positive, inclusive classroom culture where all students feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, ask questions, and collaborate with one another.
- Foster critical thinking and a growth mindset in all students, encouraging them to approach challenges with persistence and optimism.
- Use a variety of assessments, both formal and informal, to monitor both individual student and class progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
-Regularly provide feedback to students, families, and administration on student progress and growth.
Collaboration & Professional Development
-Collaborate with fellow Middle School faculty members to plan and design interdisciplinary projects, share best practices, and contribute to the development of the math curriculum.
-Participate in ongoing professional development, staying current with best practices in mathematics education, Quaker pedagogy, and middle school development.
-Serve as an active and supportive member of the school community, including attending faculty meetings, participating in school events, and supporting the broader mission of the school.
-Work directly with the Learning Specialist to help meet the learning needs of all students.
Advisory & Community Engagement
-Serve as a faculty advisor to a small group of middle school students, providing academic and social-emotional guidance, and helping to foster a sense of belonging and connection.
-Build strong relationships with students and their families, maintaining open lines of communication regarding student progress, goals, and areas of growth.
Skills & Attributes:
-Strong content knowledge of middle school math, including Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1.
-Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the varied needs of learners.
-Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, and colleagues.
-An ability to create a classroom environment that is both academically rigorous and emotionally supportive.
-A passion for teaching middle school students and helping them develop both academically and personally.
-Commitment to ongoing professional growth and reflection.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics (with minor in or experience in education), Education (with minor in or certification in Mathematics), or a related field (with similar experience previously listed) (Master’s degree preferred).
Experience:
-At least two years of experience teaching middle school math or a similar age group in a school setting (preferred).
-Familiarity with or willingness to learn about Quaker pedagogy and educational philosophy
